Equine Care Performance horses are trained and worked very hard to achieve top results and reach their maximum potential. Such intense requirements usually result in more soreness, damages and prematurely worn-out animals. 60% of a horse’s body weight is muscle and muscle groups, injured or not, don’t show up on x-rays. Muscles respond to stress and injury by compensating with other muscles and joints usage causing new stresses. Muscle soreness can be the result of injury, cooling down too fast, structural or systematic imbalance, overuse/misuse or overstretching. This results in tissue laceration that cause pain and restrict motion. Veterinarians often need to administer strong drugs or so-called “miraculous fix†to relieve these symptoms. Over time, the not so desirable, occasionally negative side effects of these drugs surfaces. Massage on the other hand, plays a vital role in prevention therapy and recovery from injuries. By working the horse in entirety rather than treating the symptoms separately, the horse will become healthier, has better immune system and thus, benefits from a longer professional career. Over time, it will also help soften undesirable character traits. Horses anticipate pain. They can’t tell us that they are hurting. Their way of going becomes short and choppy resulting in an uneven gait. Listed below more signs of muscular imbalances.
